There are plenty of opportunities for social interaction that do not include attending classes at a brick and mortar school building. If you are considering whether to homeschool your child, socializing may be a cause for concern.  When you decide to homeschool your child, almost everyone asks how you will handle social interaction.

Here is a list of ways to socialize when your child learns from home.

Sign Up For A Team Sport Or Activity

An excellent way to socialize is to join a team sport or activities like dance or gymnastics. Sign your child up for swimming classes, golf lessons or painting classes.  One of the benefits of homeschooling is the flexibility it affords.  Take advantage of this and enroll your child in a variety of enrichment activities such as musical theater or piano lessons.

LOCAL HOMESCHOOL GROUPS

You can join a homeschool group in your area where parents and homeschooled students socialize on a regular basis. These homeschool groups also offer options for field trips and classes taught by other parents.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteering offers an excellent opportunity to get out and know people from all walks of life: nursing homes, food pantry, or you could join activities in your local ministry.  Helping out your community can provide life lessons and can allow for your child to meet new people.

NEIGHBORHOOD PLAY DATES

Invite your neighborhood kids over for a fun day making crafts, baking or board games and snacks – anything that encourages talking between the children.

Get Out Of The House And Take A Visit To The Park Or The Beach

Getting away from the desk and exploring nature and science in real life as an impromptu field trip not only stimulates your child’s mind but provides ways to get out and meet other children.  Encourage your child to say hello to the other kids on the beach and allow them to observe how you strike up a conversation with other adults.
